Artist Statement
I make art to explore memory, unconscious, story telling, and how we participate with gaming technology. I attempt to infer a critical view of social and cultural relations, but try to keep distance from focusing on a specific agenda. The greater half of my work can be explored openly and in a non-linear fashion, much like a good piece of hypertext.
Similar to the layout of my work, the process evolves from exploring the open source community. Like a sculptor piecing together ready-mades for their own end, I aggregate and employ open source programs to achieve my own end. This precious, and more importantly modular resource, aids me in rapidly prototyping for animation, video games, body controllers and virtual reality suits.
My work began expressing the temporality of memory and the enduring unconscious in animation. This changed when I began working with the participative medium of video games. I began making observations on how we interact with the game in and out of focus and consciousness. This grew into studying the body in relation to the game and being in “the zone” or elevated consciousness. I connect this by using physical electronics to create game environments outside the screen alone, whether using the participants body or my own. My work continues to explore the game medium as a framing device for memory and body relations.
